ROBIN CHAPMAN: NOVELIST, PLAYWRIGHT
AND SCREENWRITER

Robinís first novel was published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1963 - in  the same year his first stage play was produced at the Theatre Royal, London E15, and his first TV play was performed on BBC tv. All three established him as a writer.

He created a sensation on ITV with his London gangland thrillers Spindoe and Big Breadwinner Hog during the era of the Kray brothers. Then he wrote two BBC Plays for Today, with music, and also the half-hour rock opera Grease Monkey.

His later plays for the stage include Gymnasium and One of Us (both at Greenwich) and Guests at Croydon Warehouse.

As a novelist Robin has now published ten novels. These include his acclaimed Cervantine trilogy, extending the lives of characters found in Don Quixote.

"A work as Quixotic in style as its title implies, and as multiple in its play with meanings and connections, past and present. It is set in the theatre of Robin Chapman's mind, which proves a magical arena. This recovery of Shakespeare's lost play, Cardenio, is both topical and made to yield a treasure trove of information, textual, biographical and critical. Always in the spirit of high comedy. A real instance of subtle learning worn with a deceptive lightness of touch.

Jean Gooder

"Learned, structurally ingenious, evocative and pleasurable."

Karl Miller

"Such an inventive idea."

Gordon Snell

"The novel successfully creates the bustling action of early modern drama. Don Quixote and his squire furnish the perfect subplot. What distinguishes Chapman's work is its interrogation of adaptation itself. Compelling."

The Times Literary Supplement

"This book is completely original."

Christopher Sinclair-Stevenson

"It's an interesting, bold, experimental (!) conception in the avant-garde."

Paul Driver
